The next morning, he stood on the sidelines watching the group prepare to head back to the station. Janel, EJ, Tartulo, Cresta, Moren, and the Twins were gearing up for war, somberly checking loads before strapping a wide variety of weapons to various body parts.

“Is it really that bad up there?” he asked EJ as she came close.

She looked better than she had the night before, having bathed at some point and changed her clothes; but there were still dark rims under her eyes, and the lines of her face seemed to have deepened overnight. “Worse,” she said grimly.

“Anything I can do?”

Her eyes roamed around the camp. “Help with the wounded as they come through, maybe take an inventory of supplies and let me know what we need when I get back?”

He nodded. That he could do, and it was a much better alternative to being in the way if they got into a firefight. “Consider it done.”

She smiled a bit. “Thanks.” She checked over the group nearby then took his hand, pulling him out of earshot of the others. “Look, Jake, um, well, see here’s the thing. You know things work differently out here, and I have to tell you, she didn’t have a choice.”

During the long, sleepless night, he’d figured that out for himself, but it was nice to have it confirmed. “Yeah, got that. Doesn’t help, but…” His gaze drifted to Janel. “Just don’t let her do anything stupid.”

EJ chuckled. “As if I could stop her?” She patted his chest. “But, you have my word; I’ll try and keep her safe.”

She moved back to the group and he could only stand there. He wanted to say something, but just couldn’t quite bring himself to forgive her yet. He should, it wasn’t like their marriage was real, or she was making any demands of him. But still…she’d done it without so much as a by your leave. What if he’d met someone else during their time apart? What if he’d gotten married again, for real? What then?

Well, you’d be a polygamist in that case.

Shut it!

The doors swished apart, interrupting his internal argument, and he watched them head through into the shadows beyond. One by one, they disappeared and his heart tripped on itself, slamming against his ribs with good dose of fear.

He should go with them…

He wanted to go with them, but knew his limitations. Even with the four weeks of training, he was no warrior. Not like them anyway.

“It is a good man that recognizes and accepts his own differences…”

He jerked at the statement and turned to find the shortest Mutarian he’d seen yet. The man bull barely reached his mid-chest and for once, he didn’t feel so small and insignificant.

“Name’s Maxx,” he said, holding out a hand.

He took it. “Jake.”

The white and brown fur on his snout parted with a smile. “I know. But it is a pleasure to finally meet you.”

“Finally?”

Maxx’s smile grew, exposing the sharp teeth typical of the race. “Oh my, yes. I have heard many things about you, so it is pleasant to put a face to the name.
